Why Grenada?
Returning to Grenada felt like stepping into a vibrant tapestry of my past. Having spent my formative years on this beautiful island, coming back after a five-year hiatus was both thrilling and sentimental. This trip wasn’t just about revisiting old memories; it was a heartfelt journey to reconnect with my family, bridge the gap with my daughter Isabella whom i was separated from during the pandemic, and embark on a broader exploration of the Caribbean.
This trip wasn’t just about revisiting old memories but also about embracing the present and reflecting on how much has changed. Grenada has a way of grounding you, and this time around, I found myself more in tune with its natural beauty and hidden treasures. Beyond the nostalgia, this journey marked the beginning of something bigger—a heartfelt reconnection not just with my roots but with the Caribbean as a whole. Exploring Grenada has reignited my passion for adventure, making me eager to discover more of the region’s diverse islands, cultures, and landscapes. This trip was just the start of what I know will be an unforgettable exploration of the Caribbean.
The Logistics of My Trip to Grenada
Entry Requirements
Grenada is relatively easy to visit, especially for U.S. passport holders who don’t require a visa. However, it’s always a good idea to check the latest entry requirements. For this trip, I ensured that all my travel documents were in order, including a valid passport and any necessary travel insurance. I however am still in possession of my Grenadian passport, which made the entry process smooth and straightforward.
Transportation
Grenada offers a range of transportation options, but I found that renting a car was the most convenient way to explore the island thoroughly. While taxis are readily available, having a rental car allowed me to travel at my own pace and discover hidden gems off the beaten path. The roads are relatively easy to navigate, and the scenic drives added to the island’s charm.
For those who prefer not to drive, local taxis and ride services are also available. Check out the “Haylup app” which is basically the islands version of uber. Booking a taxi through your hotel or a trusted local service can be a good way to ensure reliable and safe transportation, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the area. The local bus service is not verry hard to navigate once you get the hang of it, however I wouldn’t say its very reliable.
Currency
The Eastern Caribbean Dollar (XCD) is the official currency, but U.S. dollars are widely accepted throughout Grenada. I exchanged a small amount of cash at the airport for immediate expenses and used my credit card for most transactions. It’s helpful to have some local currency on hand for smaller purchases or in areas where card payments might not be accepted which i would recommend for trips to local markets ect. ATMs are widely available, and I found that withdrawing cash when needed was a straightforward process. There are a surprising amount of stores that accept contactless payments.

What I Did During My Trip to Grenada
Reconnecting with Family
One of the most meaningful aspects of my trip was reconnecting with my family, especially Isabella. We spent quality time together exploring Grenada’s stunning landscapes, visiting local markets, and immersing ourselves in the island’s culture. Each day was an opportunity to strengthen our bond and create new memories.
Cultural Immersion
Grenada’s rich cultural tapestry was a revelation. I dove into local traditions, starting with the vibrant Spicemas carnival. Participating in the festivities, I was able to reconnect with my culture firsthand. I met local creators and artists, gaining a deeper appreciation for the island’s artistic community. The carnival was not just a celebration; it was a window into the soul of Grenada.
My cultural immersion was a highlight of this trip. Playing Carnival was an exhilarating experience, filled with vibrant costumes, pulsating rhythms, and infectious energy. Engaging with local innovators was equally enriching. I discovered hidden facets of Grenadian culture through their eyes, learning more about my heritage than I had during my earlier years living here. From traditional dances to the intricate stories behind local festivals, every interaction added depth to my understanding of Grenadian traditions.
Adventures and Exploration
Grenada’s natural beauty provided countless opportunities for adventure. I explored everything! From hikes in the rainforests, to its most popular beaches, and even a number of springs and waterfalls. The island offers a range of activities, from snorkeling to see the underwater sculpture park to feeding monkeys at a volcanic crater turned lake. I did ATV tours, spontaneous riverside cook outs and i even sailed to the smaller islands
I also delved into Grenada’s culinary scene, sampling traditional dishes at local eateries and markets, i was even able to do a food tour with Spice Foodie Tours! The island’s food is a delightful mix of flavors and influences, reflecting its amazing culture. I enjoyed everything from fresh seafood to spicy local stews, each meal adding to the richness of my experience.
Highlights of My Trip
Cultural Festivals and Events
Attending Spicemas was a standout experience. The carnival is a vibrant display of Grenadian culture, offering so much more than its now-commercialized surface suggests. Iconic figures like the Jab Jab, Mocojumbies, and Shortknee carry deep historical significance, each symbolizing the island’s struggle for freedom from past oppressors. Combined with the electrifying music and dancing, it was an incredible experience to fully immerse myself in the festive atmosphere. The locals I connected with during this time were wonderfully welcoming, and their dedication to preserving their cultural traditions was truly inspiring.
Natural Wonders
Grenada is full of breathtaking natural beauty, but some of its most special places are hidden away, far from the usual tourist spots. One of my favorites is Tufton Hall Waterfall, tucked deep in the rainforest and only reachable by a challenging hike that’s totally worth it. There’s also Mt. Carmel Waterfall, my absolute favorite of the 7 waterfalls I’ve visited in Grenada so far. It’s a peaceful spot where you can relax by the falls without the crowds. And for something truly unique, the Clabony Sulfur Springs is a quiet little oasis where you can soak in warm, mineral-rich waters surrounded by nature. These hidden gems offer a glimpse into the untouched beauty of Grenada.
Exploring with a friend
Exploring Grenada with Leti, who traveled all the way from Germany to spend a month with me, added a whole new dimension to this journey. Seeing the island through her fresh eyes made even the most familiar places feel new again. We spent our days driving through winding mountain roads, discovering hidden gems tucked away from the usual tourist routes, and sharing endless laughter along the way. Whether we were hiking to remote waterfalls or enjoying a peaceful afternoon at a quiet beach, each moment felt like an adventure.
Isabella quickly warmed up to Leti, and before long, she became part of our little family. Watching their bond grow made the trip even more special. This experience has inspired me to consider hosting group trips in the future, with the hope of bringing this sense of connection and shared discovery to other women around the world. There’s something truly magical about exploring new places together, and I’d love to help create that for others.
Surviving Beryl
Surviving Tropical Storm Beryl was a notable chapter of my trip because it came so suddenly. Staying at the charming La Boucan villa in Grand Anse, I was relieved to be safe and secure throughout the storm, and present to ensure that Isabella and my mother were also well-protected. I can’t imagine what it would have been like had I been in New York at the time, while they experienced such an event with no access to the internet or service . The experience was a sobering reminder of nature’s power, but it also presented an unexpected opportunity for me to give back. I volunteered in Carriacou, where the aftermath of Beryl’s impact was truly devastating. Witnessing the destruction firsthand was heart-wrenching, but it also underscored the resilience and spirit of the local communities working tirelessly to recover. The experience deepened my appreciation for the strength of Grenadians and the importance of coming together in times of crisis.
Reflections on My Trip
Safety and Comfort
Throughout my stay, I felt safe and welcomed, thanks to Grenada’s friendly locals and the island’s overall laid-back atmosphere. While I did encounter a few challenges, such as navigating some of the more remote and less accessible areas, they didn’t overshadow the joy of my trip. Interestingly, Grenada’s crime rate is higher now than in previous years, which can be a real shock for locals accustomed to a “it takes a village” mentality. However, as someone who’s lived in larger cities like New York, I found the crime to feel much less frequent. Most incidents seemed to stem from personal conflicts or passionate disputes, and my friends and I never experienced anything dangerous or scary firsthand.
Language and Communication
English is the primary language spoken in Grenada, making communication easy for English-speaking travelers. The local dialect adds a unique touch to conversations, enhancing the cultural experience.
As a Black Woman
My experience as a Black woman in Grenada was largely positive. The island’s diverse population and welcoming environment ensured that I felt comfortable and respected. While there were moments of heightened attention from men due to my appearance, these were minor compared to the overall warmth and hospitality I experienced.
What I Would Have Done if I Had More Time
Although my three-month stay in Grenada was incredibly fulfilling, I found myself yearning to explore even more. The southern part of the island, with its hidden gems like the Jozani National Forest and butterfly sanctuaries, promises additional adventures I’ve yet to experience. I also wished I had had more time to volunteer in Carriacou, where the devastation from Hurricane Beryl was heartbreaking. I would have loved to immerse myself further in the recovery efforts and contribute more meaningfully. Additionally, working on a farm, experiencing the island’s agricultural life firsthand, was another opportunity I missed but plan to pursue in future visits. Exploring more of Grenada’s northern side and diving deeper into its local culture and natural beauty are definitely on my list for the next adventure.
Final Thoughts
Returning to Grenada was an unforgettable journey of reconnection and rediscovery. The trip allowed me to deepen my understanding of my heritage, reunite with Isabella, and embrace the island’s beauty and culture. For anyone considering a visit to Grenada, be prepared for a rich and rewarding experience that will leave you with lasting memories.
